SULTAN OF EGYPT ADMİRES AMERICA
Also Has Greatest of Confidence, He Asserts, in Protection of Great Britain.
Alexandria, Egypt, Sept. 8. (Correspondence of the Associated Press.) —
“I have great hopes for Egypt. I believe under the protection of England, the greatest of liberal powers, the future of Egypt is assured.”
It was His Highness, Hussein Kamil, the new Sultan of Egypt, speaking. The occasion was an audience granted to a representative of the Associated Press. The Sultan is a man of magnetic personality and a charming conversationalist, democratic in his ideas. Throughout his life — he is 65 years old — he has been a student of the world and has a profound knowledge of many subjects.
His Highness expressed satisfaction with the progress made thus far as regards the change in ideas and sentiments of the people since his accession, and added that there was an ever-growing feeling of confidence in Great Britain.
“When I was asked to assume the position of sultan I declined at first,” continued His Highness, “the situation was then a complicated and difficult one. After careful reflection I decided that I could do Egypt a service by accepting. Accordingly I cast my lot with Great Britain. I have shaken hands with the British; I have pledged my faith, and I shall carry my agreement to a finish, understanding well that it is in the interest of my country.
“Had it not been for my faith in the British government and my belief that there would be a gradual increase in the rights granted us in the matter of self-rule, I should never have undertaken the task.”
“I have great admiration for America,” he continued. “I admire American pluck, initiative and love of country. Americans have the virtue of national heart, which is as it should be. I have been greatly pleased in Paris to see American children proudly wearing badges made of the stars and stripes. I believe that these tiny folk knew the feeling of patriotism and that this is typical of your great republic. And you are advancing. I have watched with great interest the progress of America in world affairs, beginning with the presidency of Mr. Roosevelt, and believe that you will become more and more a factor in international affairs.”
Speaking of the attitude of the Egyptian people to the protectorate at the outset, His Highness admitted that there had been some hostility, and stated this was due primarily to so-called religious reasons, the mixing up of politics and religion.
“Such feelings of resentment as there may have been,” said the Sultan, “was among that class of people whose religious conceptions had been rendered faulty and who had arrived at a certain fanaticism entirely foreign to Islamism, which Germany and other powers had exploited in their own interests.”

“The people of Egypt are now one and work for the good of Egypt.”
Hussein Kamil is a great believer in education as a means of establishing good government and prosperity. One of his most striking declarations was that he was an earnest advocate of education for Egyptian women.
“I have many plans for education in Egypt,” he said. “For one thing I hope for the establishment of compulsory education for both boys and girls. As to the girls, we already have some normal schools for them established by the provincial councils. There is a growing tendency on the part of the young to take advantage of the education offered.
“Since agriculture is the mainstay of Europe the Sultan also has plans for assisting the farmers in the matter of agricultural education. His Highness has been an ardent agriculturist himself, devoting much of his time as a private to his estates.
“In closing the audience the Sultan again turned his thoughts toward America.
“I cannot let you go,” he said, “without some reference to the American army officers who labored so unselfishly with me while I was minister of war under the reign of my father. In the reconstruction of the Egyptian army, I would mention particularly General Stone, Colonel Chaillé-Long, Colonel Mason and Colonel Purdy. To these men I am deeply grateful.”
His Highness had reference to General Charles P. Stone (Pasha), Colonel Chaillé-Long, Colonel Alexander Mason (Bey) and Colonel James Purdy (Pasha), who, with a number of other American army officers came to Egypt shortly after the civil war and were appointed to assist in the reorganization of the Egyptian army under the present Sultan’s father, Ismael Pasha, who was then ruler. General Stone was made chief of staff of the army.

Sultan, Mısır halkının başlangıçta İngiliz himayesine karşı bir miktar düşmanlık gösterdiğini kabul etti; ancak bunun temel sebebinin din ile siyasetin karıştırılması olduğunu söyledi.

Hüseyin Kamil eğitimin; iyi yönetim ve refahın temel yolu olduğuna güçlü şekilde inanıyordu. En dikkat çekici açıklamalarından biri de Mısırlı kadınların eğitiminin güçlü savunucularından biri olduğunu söylemesiydi.
“Mısır’da eğitim konusunda birçok planım var,” dedi. “Örneğin kız ve erkek çocuklar için zorunlu eğitim kurulmasını istiyorum. Kızlar için ise şimdiden bazı öğretmen okulları il meclisleri tarafından kurulmuş durumda. Gençlerin eğitime yönelme eğilimi giderek artıyor.”
Tarım konusunda da çiftçilere tarımsal eğitim verilmesini desteklediğini belirtti. Kendisi de tarıma büyük ilgi duyan biri olarak zamanının önemli kısmını çiftlikleriyle ilgilenerek geçiriyordu.
Görüşmenin sonunda Sultan yeniden Amerika konusuna döndü:
“Sizi göndermeden önce şunu söylemeliyim,” dedi, “Babam döneminde Harbiye Nazırı iken Mısır ordusunun yeniden düzenlenmesinde bana büyük fedakârlıkla yardımcı olan Amerikalı subayları anmadan geçemem. Özellikle General Stone, Albay Chaillé-Long, Albay Mason ve Albay Purdy’ye derin minnet duyuyorum.”
Burada Sultan’ın bahsettiği kişiler; Amerikan İç Savaşı sonrasında Mısır’a gelip Mısır ordusunun yeniden yapılanmasında görev alan Amerikalı subaylardı. General Stone daha sonra ordunun genelkurmay başkanı olmuştu.
