I had to move from a flat because a neighbour had a wood burner installed and, in spite of sealing all the windows, I was ill non stop. I bought a Meaco Air Purifier for the lounge and another for the bedroom which succeeded in removing the smell of wood smoke and I coped better but still felt unwell. I moved to a bungalow in an area where I don't react to the outside air and used the Meaco to cope successfully with the existing carpets in the house.
Then I bought a new wool carpet, which didn't cause any problems. I've learned from experience than man made fibre carpets are sheer poison, but an 80/20 blend is fine. Then I made a massive mistake and bought two 'new' settees. I thought I was buying ex-display which would have been aired out but they were new seconds and, besides flame retardant chemicals they had somehow become perfumed. I ran a fan in the lounge and the Meaco for a couple of weeks, living mainly in the bedroom. Then, MIRACLE, I discovered the Dyson Pure air purifier. It's very expensive but has a HEPA filter (whatever that means) and, unlike old style air cleansers (which I tried but returned because they made the problem much, much worse) there are NO chemicals involved. I run this on automatic all the time and I am now living happily in my lounge again. I eat in the lounge while watching TV and it automatically steps up the filter system when it detects my meal (it goes berserk when I have fish) so I assume it is just as fussy with things I might react to but don't smell. I bought this direct from Dyson as it was a bit cheaper there than buying through Amazon. You could do research on Amazon to read other peoples experience of this machine. Make sure you buy the Dyson Pure as they do sell a Dyson Cool which is basically just a fan.
To show how sensitive it is, if I leave the lounge door open while I'm in the kitchen, which is round a corner and down a hall, the automatic system reacts to the odours from the kitchen and steps up its speed.
At the high speed when it is dealing with strong pollution it is noisy and makes the room quite cold but as it reduces the pollution in gradually goes down in steps until it is happy and switches itself back to zero awaiting the next influx of possible allergens.
When my son visited it went up to level 4 straight away, about 10 seconds after he came into the room. He deliberately doesn't wear perfumed products when he visits and is a non smoker but the residue on his clothes alerted the Dyson which didn't go down to zero again until he'd been gone some time. Wonderful machine for me.
I have my food allergies under control, thanks to EPD, but have MCS after a couple of operations (I think it was triggered by the general anaesthetics). I can't go out much but know I'm not as bad as some people on this site. When I do go out I wear a personal air supply round my neck (which is a help with perfumes but is not 100% and doesn't seem to help enough to cope with chemicals used in cleaning floors) and always carry a mask to give myself escape time.
